Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI)
Effective communication is essential. At the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf, we are committed to fostering a signing-rich environment that fully supports the language and learning needs of our students.
Why the SLPI Matters
The Sign Language Proficiency Interview assesses expressive and receptive American Sign Language skills. This evaluation helps maintain a linguistically accessible environment for all students, staff, and community members.
Who is Required to Take the SLPI?
Teachers pursuing Minnesota Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH) or ASL licensure are also required to complete the SLPI, through a partnership between MSA, the Minnesota Department of Education, and the Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB).
Legal Requirement for ASL Proficiency (D/HH Licensure)
In accordance with Minnesota Statutes, section 122A.28, subdivision 1, educators seeking D/HH licensure must:
Demonstrate proficiency in American Sign Language communication fluency commensurate with an Intermediate-Plus level of proficiency on the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) or a comparable American Sign Language evaluation jointly approved by the Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board and the commissioner of education in consultation with the Minnesota Association of Deaf Citizens and the Commission of the Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing.
